When chronic heavy drinkers that took place in a government sponsored study substituted alcohol for carbohydrates in their diets, they were reported to lose weight and to weigh less than their nondrinking counterparts; additionally, when chronic heavy drinkers added alcohol to an otherwise normal diet, they did not appear to gain weight.
Much research that is related to alcohol has consistently indicated that the long-term use of high amounts of alcohol is known to damage brain cells; it is not yet clear whether alcohol abuse (as in binge drinking0 over the short term can permanently damage nerve cell neurotransmitter receptors.
Heavy drinking puts postmenopausal women at risk for fractures from falls due to their increased risk for osteoporosis from alcohol's effect on blood estrogen levels coupled with their increased risk of falling due to alcohol consumption.
