Most teenagers are not abusing alcohol, as current research indicates that over 60 percent of individuals that are between the ages of 12-20 have not had a drink in the past month.
Individuals who start drinking alcohol before the age of 15 are twice as likely to develop an abuse problem and four times as likely to develop alcoholism, versus those who do not begin drinking before age 21.
A study by National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) indicates that acetaldehyde, the primary breakdown product of ethanol and a known carcinogen, does increase the incidence of upper gastrointestinal cancer.
